A trial piece from my city in flux artist research

I made this experimental piece after looking at Banksy's work. I looked at the different kinds of satirical topics he had portrayed in his works & also the use of black, white and minimal use of red colours in his stencil pieces. I also noticed that Banksy uses a minimal amount of words with his pieces. Then after all this, I tried choosing a satirical topic to base my experimental piece on and eventually came up with the topic of underage gun usage in America.
To make the piece I:
1 - Found an image from google images. However this image wasn't a straight-forward stencil, it had shading.
2 - In order to get rid of the shading I inserted the image into Photoshop, went on to Image>Adjustments>Posterize, then Image>Adjustments>Threshold and this made the image into a solid black and white fill stencil for me to cutout.
3 - Once I cutout the stencil with a craft knife and cutting mat, I went back on to Photoshop and did a couple of trials with the stencil image in order to see how it was going to look (i.e. what was the typography going to say, where was it going to be placed etc.) In the end I realised that what I wrote in the above picture was too long and just settled for, 'I'm Only 11' as this was short just like Banksy's work, and also like Banksy's work, this made people think about the phrase and how it linked to the stencil.

City In Flux Artist Research

After making my mind map, I progressed further into my City in Flux work by researching several artists. I had researched some of these artists before and so that's why they were some of the first to come into my mind. I had to look at what interested & influenced these artists and also how they influenced/how they could influence my work.

Here is some of their work:
KEITH HAIRNG
Keith Haring's art was inspired the graffiti in the New York City subways; the bold lines and colours.

LORI NIX
Lori Nix says she was inspired by landscape painters. She was interested in looking at the city in a different perspective. The above picture shows a library taken over by nature in a future where mankind is no more.

BANKSY
Banksy was inspired by local artists in Bristol where he was brought up. His works are often based on satire and the message given is usually anti-war, anti-capitalist or anti-establishment.

SHEPHARD FAIREY
Shepard Fairey has stated that he takes his influences and inspiration from other street artists along with films he has seen (such as John Carpenter's 'They Live'), and slogans/quotes from well known people (such as celebrities/philosophers etc.)

BARBARA KRUGER
Barbara Kruger said that she was interested in the power of words/typography and how a few words could convey a large and hard-hitting message.

City In Flux - Mind Map

Before starting out my City In Flux project, I made a mind map in order to help guide myself towards a concept to base my work on.

Process & Production - Short Story

BELOW IS A SHORT STORY I MADE. OUR CONCEPT WAS TO GATHER NEWSPAPERS AND CUT OUT RANDOM STORIES FROM THEM. THEN WE HAD TO TRY AND PIECE TOGETHER EACH STORY INTO OUR OWN SHORT STORY (NO MATTER HOW RANDOM). MY NEWSPAPER STORIES/CUTOUTS CONSISTED OF KIM JONG-UN MAKING A SURPRISE VISIT BACK IN NORTH KOREA, AN ONLINE HOAX VIDEO AGAINST PEPPA PIG, AN ADVERT FOR A HOLIDAY TO BARCELONA AND A SPORTS PIECE ABOUT ARSENE WENGER AND HIS FOOTBALL TEAM; ARSENAL. THIS IS WHAT I PRODUCED FROM THESE SOURCES.

Surprise, surprise.

The air was crisp outside Manchester Airport in the early dawn. The presence of weak sunlight and the cacophony of the city sounds were beginning to emerge into Terminal 2. The sounds of several suitcases banging onto airport trolleys and a deep murmur could be heard throughout the car park. One in particular was Arsene Wenger’s suitcase, packed with many unknown items for his holiday. As he dragged his trolley from the car park towards the entrance doors, every so often a squeak followed by a rattle would occur due to the wobbly and uneven wheel on the trolley. The rattling sound was followed by another trolley, only this one was being hauled by a small asian youth along with someone else. This someone else had a rotund figure and was eerily following behind Arsene. Dressed in dark clothes with a comically looking pair of glasses, overcoat and a newspaper in hand was none other than Kim Jong-Un, with his personal errand boy Junaid, who was donning a scarf, hat and parka coat to protect his frail body from the harsh temperatures of the morning. While Wenger walked wavily towards the check in desk he heard his name being whispered ever so slightly from behind. He stopped in his tracks and turned around to glance and see where this was coming from. At this point Kim suddenly unravelled the newspaper in an instance and covered his face as if to show he was reading it, while Junaid took a less inventive way of hiding himself and simply bobbed down behind the trolley, after all, it was big enough to cover his small stature. Much to Jong-Un’s advantage, Wenger thought nothing of it and carried on his check in, and eventually boarded the plane, as did Jong-Un and Junaid.

Once on the flight, the time seemed to go buy very fast, like a clock moving in stop motion. The plane eventually landed at its destination; Barcelona. Wenger was to spend his holiday here, away from football for a weekend, while Kim Jong-Un and his trusty servant were there for other plans. “But sir, if you would just tell me what we are here for, then maybe I can get a better understanding of what it is that I’m supposed to be doing” said Junaid. “OK, OK!” groaned Kim. He pulled off his large overcoat in such a manner as if he were to reveal a superhero spandex costume underneath, however this was no superhero costume, it was in fact, an Arsenal shirt! “My liege! how could you, I though you supported the fury that is, the Wolmido Sports Club!” said Junaid in a state of shock. “Alas my young protege, this is not the case, I am secretly an Arsenal fanatic and have been one ever since ‘Tezza’ (Thierry Henry) joined the crew back in 99” revealed Jong-Un. His mission was to follow Arsene into the hotel and uncover his game plan for Arsenal’s next season. “Quickly now Junaid, we have no time to lose, we must get hold of that file ASAP. Our best chance to sneak into Wenger’s room is when he is in the shower; which will probably be soon”, Jong-Un uttered while taking a step back from Wenger.

Later on when both Kim and Junaid were in their room, Kim told Junaid to find out whether the coast was clear to start raiding Wenger’s room. Junaid slowly peeked his head out the room door, looked left, then looked right and only heard the echoey murmurs of the building. “Coast is clear sir”, whispered Junaid in hush tones. Both left the room and quietly walked up to Wenger’s room door. “First a quick check to make sure he’s not in the living room”, said Junaid to Kim. He pressed his ear firmly against the door to try and hear some sound. “Nothing”, mouthed Junaid. This was the moment of truth, he unlocked the door by using an old credit card trick he saw from Youtube. To their surprise, it worked! Junaid slowly creeped open the door and entered the room, followed by Jong-Un who walked in backwards while checking around to make sure no-one was looking. Once they were in, the search began. First the drawers and then the wardrobes; the room was being inspected left right and centre, until… “Yes! Jackpot!” said Junaid with whimsy under his breath, “I’ve found it”. Jong-Un dropped whatever was in his hands and rushed right over towards Junaid. He snatched the file from Junaid’s hands while knocking him over in the process due to his large size. Junaid scratched his head and got back up, asking, “so sir, is it what you expected?” A pause then followed. “Sir, what’s the matter?” Jong-Un slowly turned the opened file towards Junaid’s eyes and revealed a bunch of papers with the front piece titled, “PEPPA PIG AGAINST ISLAM HOAX”. At this point both Junaid and Jong-Un were in total dismay as to what they were reading on the paper. However, they were interrupted by the silence which suddenly arose in the room. The sound of the shower was gone which meant Wenger was about to exit the bathroom. Junaid and Kim both glanced at each other and knew they were too far away from the door to leave without Arsene noticing them, so they both combat rolled behind the furniture out of Wenger’s view and held their breath as best as the could. Wenger opened the door and a burst of steam followed. As soon as the air was cleared, both Kim and Junaid saw a man dressed in traditional Islamic clothing along with a hat and beard. At this point Kim had a thought; ‘was this Arsene Wenger?’. ‘Are we in the right room?’ thought Junaid. Then, to answer his own question, Junaid looked at the suitcase in the corner of the room which was clearly labelled ‘Arsene Wenger’.

It turned out that this man in a fake beard was actually Arsene Wenger disguised as an Islamic dad in order to send out his hoax message of his hatred for Peppa Pig. Wenger sat down in front of his laptop and started to record his video, at which point, Junaid and Kim slowly exited the room. They rushed back to their room and promised to never speak of this incident to anyone besides themselves. They then both packed their bags, checked out of the hotel and got the first flight back to North Korea at which point Kim Jong-Un made his surprise entrance to the people of North Korea, disproving their stories of him being dead. On the other hand, Arsene managed to make the media across the world shake up due to the message in his video, however the media eventually figured out that the video was a hoax.

To this day, no-one knows that these mysterious hoax persona’s are actually Arsene Wenger except for Kim Jong-Un and his errand boy Junaid.
